Life Tower
Design 7 - Group Academic Project
The focus for this project in the design of this tower was sustaining the community of Miami. Not only ensuring its success during times of prosperity, but also during times of crisis. We created an accessible self-sustaining tower that not only responds to the needs of the city but, in times of disaster, becomes a shelter for those who need it.
To support the tower and the community during times of stress, we implemented self-sustaining aspects throughout the structure, such as vertical farming, solar power, and a hydroelectric energy system to support and power the tower. These systems allow our structure to be self-sustainable by supporting each other in case of an emergency where exterior energy and food sources are inaccessible.
Adaptability, when in times of need, became one of the core values of this project. The programs are arranged, ensuring flexibility is present in the spaces that require it. Meaning that in case of an emergency, specific spaces within our tower have the opportunity of turning into emergency shelters at a moment's notice.
The education center and gym were two of the main adaptable spaces located within the structure, able not only to function as a gathering hub but as a place of respite in times of distress. Each was designed with the intention of being converted into a shelter should the need arise
Advent Health Oncology Center
Design 6 - Group Academic Project
Advent Health's new downtown oncology center at its core seeks to give visitors a newfound sense of safety and comfort in a hospital environment utilizing a variety of natural elements and control to ensure the patient experience is prioritized. This is done in the hope that patients leave this center on their first or last day of cancer treatment unafraid to come back.
With a manual kinetic skin using a Trespa paneling system, this structure gives patients more control and improves their comfort. Through this skin, patients could control the amount of light they received during the day, especially on floors for infusion or in instances where they remained seated for extended periods.
We intended to bring the atmosphere and comfort that water brings to the human psyche into our Infusion bay and treatment areas. A big design driver for us was to draw in the warmth of natural light and to influence the space with the reflectivity of water.
